Discord web search controls apply when each message is sent

Discord will expose eligible public-channel content in stages. Members and admins need different controls, and switching off future messages does not erase earlier eligible posts.

Discord members who do not want future public-channel messages on the open web can change their setting before the rollout. The important qualification is that the setting applies when a message is sent: turning it off later does not withdraw messages sent while it was enabled.

Discord announced the change on October 27, 2026, the same date as IGN's originating report. The change concerns public channels in Discoverable Servers, rather than private servers, direct messages or group DMs.

Two launches, with different kinds of content

From November 16, every Discoverable Server will have a public Server Web Page, and channel summaries can begin. Individual messages start rolling out gradually in mid-December; Discord says messages sent before that point are excluded. A date on the calendar does not mean every eligible message will appear immediately.

Discord's administrator guide separates summaries from messages and gives each its own controls. Private and role-restricted channels are excluded. Public channels taking part carry a label.

This can make a useful community answer accessible to someone who has not joined the server. It also changes the likely audience for a reply. Treat a channel's web label as information about distribution, not simply another interface decoration.

Set the member preference before sending

The member guide gives this route on desktop or the browser:

  1. Open User Settings and select Data & Privacy.

  2. Find “Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.”

  3. Turn it off if you do not want eligible future messages displayed.

One preference covers all your Discoverable Servers. It defaults off for accounts in the EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea; teen accounts cannot enable it. Elsewhere it is generally on, so inspect the actual account preference rather than infer it from a headline.

Messages sent while the setting is on can remain eligible after it is switched off. Discord says deleting an individual message removes it from Discord's own web pages, but search engines may retain copies and use separate removal processes.

Administrators have a separate decision

Server owners and administrators should review Server Settings > Community > Web Presence. The member switch governs individual messages; it does not replace the server's separate summary controls.

Discord says published messages omit usernames and avatars. That should not be read as a guarantee that the words cannot identify their author through context. For communities, the practical work is to choose which discussions should reach an outside audience and explain those choices before members post.
