Instagram brings Reels to Apple TV running tvOS 26

Instagram's official TV app adds an Apple TV route for Reels and longer videos. Compatibility includes older boxes, while features can still vary by region.

Apple TV owners can try Instagram's official television app on compatible hardware running tvOS 26 or later. The useful first step is to check the box already connected to the TV: Apple's TV-specific app metadata lists older Apple TV devices alongside newer models.

The US App Store listing now includes Apple TV and states the tvOS requirement. Apple's TV-software metadata dates version 66.0 to October 23, 2026; The Verge reported the arrival on October 25. The build date and the reporting date are separate. The original Instagram app's much older release date does not date this television version.

Start with the box already in the room

The TV-specific metadata includes the Apple TV HD and several Apple TV 4K generations, including the second and third. That supports checking an existing device before considering replacement. It does not establish that every account in every country can use every feature.

Apple's model-identification guide can help distinguish similarly named boxes. Its 2022 third-generation Apple TV 4K is one example of hardware listed by the app's metadata. A newer processor is not itself an installation requirement in the listing.

Confirm the installed tvOS version, look for the official app in the device's App Store and check the offer for the account being used. If the app is absent or a feature unavailable, establish the software, account and regional conditions before spending money on a different box. Hardware replacement alone does not establish service eligibility.

The advertised experience centres on video

Instagram's Apple TV event listing promotes Reels and longer videos. The TV-specific description also advertises live shows and resuming viewing across screens. These are developer descriptions, rather than TechKili hands-on findings.

There is a useful historical distinction. In its June 22 TV expansion announcement, Meta described Samsung availability alongside Fire TV and Google TV, and experiments with television formats. Apple TV adds another platform to that effort.

The June announcement's casting details were specific to Google TV and Fire TV. They should not be treated as evidence that the Apple TV app has identical casting behavior. Likewise, a video-focused description does not prove that the television client reproduces every mobile feature.

Decide whether the feed belongs on a shared screen

A television makes a viewing choice visible to other people in the room. Before signing in, consider whether the account's personalised recommendations suit that audience. This is a practical consequence of a shared display, not a claim that a new privacy setting has been introduced.

The App Store warns that some Instagram features may be unavailable by country or region. Its compatibility entry is a good starting point for installation; actual availability and the household's viewing needs determine whether the app is useful. Owners with a supported box have a reason to try the software before making a hardware decision.
