RemoveMacAI 1.0.1 clarifies which Mac cleanup actions delete immediately

The new native app goes beyond disabling Apple Intelligence. Its latest patch distinguishes immediate deletion and reports only measured model space.

RemoveMacAI's new Mac cleanup app makes an important distinction clearer in version 1.0.1: some actions change settings that can be restored, while others delete storage immediately. The October 7 release notes say unavailable simulators and local Time Machine snapshots now carry an immediate-deletion warning and a Remove button. Users considering the tool should review those actions separately from switching off Apple Intelligence.

The project moved beyond its earlier command-line interface with the 1.0.0 native app release. GitHub records that release at 23:50 UTC on October 6, which was already October 7 in the Canary Islands; 1.0.1 followed that morning. The Verge's October 5 coverage preceded these app releases.

Three cleanup paths need different recovery assumptions

The tagged 1.0.1 documentation describes several mechanisms behind the interface. Treating all of them as an undoable toggle would miss an important difference.

  • Settings: the documentation describes a configuration profile or a record of the previous setting value. Check which features a change disables and what undo restores.

  • Ordinary storage cleanup: files move to the Trash. Review its contents before emptying it.

  • Unavailable simulators and local Time Machine snapshots: macOS tools delete them immediately. Decide whether those items are still needed before confirming.

These are the maintainer's descriptions, not results of TechKili testing. The app and CLI share their settings undo history, but that history should not be treated as a backup of deleted storage. The patch also adds warnings before disabling background helpers such as VPN or Docker components, recognizing that a background item may support an active workflow.

Measure this Mac's models before deciding

Version 1.0.1 reports only model space the app has measured. That is more useful for a storage decision than assuming every installation contains the same amount of removable data. Apple's Apple Intelligence requirements, published September 14, list different storage allowances by device class: up to 14 GB for some models and up to 8 GB for others. Those requirements are not a measurement of what this utility will reclaim.

The project's documentation also says macOS can delete model files on its own schedule after its asset service releases them. A completed removal operation and an immediate change in the Storage settings display are therefore different observations. Check the reported state and actual free space rather than turning a headline's figure into an expected result.

Check the system and the features you use

The maintainer lists Apple silicon and macOS 27 as requirements; macOS 26 and earlier are unsupported. The app is not notarized, which adds a trust decision before installation. Open source availability alone does not establish that a particular downloaded build has been independently audited.

Disabling Apple Intelligence can also affect apps using Apple's on-device Foundation Models framework and the Use Model action in Shortcuts, according to the project. A sensible evaluation starts with the features and workflows to retain, then selects individual changes.
