Homey has introduced Portal, a dedicated smart-home controller designed for a desk or wall. The Verge reported the launch on September 1, 2026. Homey's own announcement describes a 2.8-inch touchscreen surrounded by a stainless-steel ring that users can rotate to adjust lights, volume or temperature.
A room control surface rather than another phone app
Portal is assigned to a Homey zone such as a living room or kitchen. It can then expose devices already connected in that zone, while the home screen can pin frequently used Flows, Moods and controls. The ring handles continuous adjustments, and the display is used for actions such as changing a track or light color.
The central product idea is direct, shared control. A fixed surface can be available to household members and visitors without asking them to install an app or learn a voice command. Physical rotation may also be quicker for small changes than opening a dashboard on a phone. Those are interface advantages suggested by the design; real responsiveness and accessibility still need independent testing.
Portal depends on the Homey ecosystem
Homey lists Portal as compatible with Homey Cloud, Homey Pro models from 2023 through 2026, Homey Pro mini and Homey Self-Hosted Server. It is therefore an interface for an existing Homey system, not a replacement for the platform that connects devices and runs automations.
That dependency is the first thing a prospective buyer should check. Someone already using Homey can add a consistent controller to a room. Someone starting from scratch must also evaluate the required Homey service or hardware, supported devices and ongoing operating model. Compatibility should be confirmed against the exact products in the home rather than inferred from a wireless protocol or brand name.
Desk and wall placement change the practical use
Homey says each Portal includes a desk stand and wall mount. Desk placement makes the controller movable and visible; wall mounting creates a predictable shared location. The best choice will depend on power access, reach, viewing angle and whether children or guests should use it.
Portal can also display energy information. The usefulness of that view depends on what the connected Homey installation can measure and expose. The announcement does not mean every appliance automatically reports energy consumption.
Shipping is planned before the end of 2026
Homey is taking preorders and says orders are expected to ship before the end of 2026 on a first-come, first-served basis. A preorder estimate is not the same as verified delivery, so buyers should review regional terms and the current schedule before committing.
TechKili has not tested Portal physically. Questions such as screen readability, dial precision, latency, mounting quality and behavior during network or service interruptions require a retail unit and a representative Homey installation.
What to evaluate before adding a controller
Existing Homey users should identify the zone where a shared control surface removes actual friction, then list the devices and Flows it needs to expose. They should also consider whether one Portal is enough or whether the zone-based model encourages multiple units.
The product is most compelling when it replaces repeated app navigation with a small number of reliable actions. Its value will depend less on the screen size than on consistent device support, fast feedback and clear household permissions.
