What Emirates has changed
The Next Web reported on September 4, 2026 that Emirates had introduced a new premium economy seat for newly delivered Airbus A350 aircraft. Its defining feature is a full-height privacy divider that passengers can raise, lower and lock using the seat controls.
Emirates describes the product as the world's first electrically powered premium economy seat with a full-height adjustable privacy screen. That claim needs its qualifiers. Japan Airlines already uses premium economy seats with a fixed backshell and large divider, and other cabins have used smaller manual partitions. The narrower technical novelty is the combination of a full-height adjustable divider and electric actuation throughout this cabin class.
A seat is becoming a small hardware platform
The cabin contains 28 seats in a 2-3-2 layout. Emirates says each seat is 20 inches wide with pitch of up to 39 inches and reclines into a cradle position without moving into the row behind. A passenger control unit provides powered seat adjustment and preset lounge and meal positions.
The seat also brings together several device-oriented features: wireless charging, USB-C power, a tray-table phone holder and a 13.3-inch 4K HDR entertainment touchscreen. Newly delivered A350s add left and right exterior camera views to the existing forward and downward feeds. A Safran U-Dream headrest with adjustable wings and a manually deployed footrest complete the hardware package.
The phone holder is a revealing design choice. Airlines can no longer assume the seatback screen is the only display a passenger will use. By giving a phone a stable position and power, Emirates is treating the personal device as a second screen instead of forcing a competition between the two.
Privacy becomes a physical control
A motorized divider makes personal space visible and directly controllable. Unlike a software privacy setting, its state is obvious to the passenger and the person in the adjacent seat. That can improve confidence in the feature, but it also adds actuators, wiring and control hardware to every position.
Emirates has not published the divider mechanism's supplier, weight, power use or maintenance interval. Those details will determine how the design affects reliability and operating cost. In aviation, a new comfort feature must also fit inspection, repair and cabin-safety procedures; the announcement does not provide that engineering detail.
What passengers and airlines should watch
Passengers should look for the specific newly delivered A350 configuration rather than assume every Emirates premium economy flight has the divider. The airline says the seat is debuting on those aircraft, but it has not announced a complete retrofit timetable for existing cabins.
Other airlines will be watching whether passengers value an adjustable barrier enough to justify its weight and maintenance. Fixed shells can preserve space with fewer moving parts, while a motorized screen offers more choice. The market test is whether that control becomes a standard feature or remains limited to a small premium cabin.
