Ecovacs has introduced the DEEBOT X12S OmniCyclone, a robot vacuum and mop that adds upgraded roller cleaning, targeted liquid spray and a physical camera shutter. CNET reported from an IFA demonstration on September 5, 2026, and its observation exposed a useful gap between a feature claim and one real demonstration.
What the X12S is designed to do
Ecovacs says FocusJet can spray water and cleaning solution onto a selected stain, wait roughly 15 to 30 seconds and then pass over it with the OZMO Roller 3.0. The manufacturer also lists a bagless OmniCyclone dock, 53 air watts of suction, rapid charging during mop-cleaning intervals and a roller that continuously refreshes with clean water.
These are manufacturer specifications and controlled claims. They describe the intended system, not independently measured performance in typical homes. Floor material, lighting, mapping, stain shape and cleaning-solution use can all affect a targeted routine.
One miss matters, but it is not a verdict
During CNET’s IFA demonstration, the robot eventually detected ketchup on white tile and activated its spray, but the liquid landed beyond the stain. The roller later removed the ketchup while passing over it, so the cleaning task succeeded even though the targeting feature did not contribute as intended.
A single trade-show run is not enough to establish a general failure rate. It does show why buyers should wait for repeatable tests before treating automatic stain targeting as hands-off. The environment was small, bright and well mapped, which makes the miss relevant evidence rather than an extreme edge case.
Privacy and allergy claims need separate checks
The X12S has a physical shutter that covers its AIVI camera. A mechanical barrier gives users a visible way to block the lens, although it limits camera-based functions while closed. Privacy still depends on app permissions, account security, data handling and other sensors beyond the camera itself.
CNET also reports manufacturer-linked laboratory results for dust-mite and allergen removal. Those results should not be read as a medical outcome or a substitute for independent home testing. Cleaning performance and health management are separate questions.
What to watch next
Useful evidence will come from controlled tests across repeated stains, floor types and lighting conditions, plus measurements of navigation, pickup, dock maintenance and privacy controls. A software update might improve targeting, but neither source had confirmed a fix in the cited material.
The X12S brings several practical ideas together. CNET’s observation is a reminder that a visible feature in a product demonstration still needs repeatability before it becomes a dependable buying reason.
